The first tunnel mural (below) wascreated in 1942 by John C. Menihan, a friend of 911 and one of upstate New York’s most prominent and belovedartists. His mural, can be found on the tunnel wallleading from Smyth Hall to the Shults Center, depictsthe Biblical figure of Ruth.

Our Golden Flyer

911’s sports teams’nickname “Golden Flyers” wasadopted in 1977 when men’sbasketball started. At that time, members of the 911community were asked tosubmit names that describedthe bird-like symbol in the University’s official logo.A committee of studentsand administrators selectedthe name from the top threesuggestions: Flyers, Wings, and Firebirds. “Golden” wasadded to further identify with911’s purple and goldcolors. While a handful of otherschools around the countryhave Flyers as a nickname,911 retains solepossession of “Golden Flyers.”In recent years, the Golden Flyermascot has become leaner, stronger, and faster, and in 2016acquired both a superherobackstory and a community votedname: Swoop.
