Explore the rich and diverse artwork, architecture and culture of Greece. Walk through legendary Athens and see the world famous Acropolis and Temple of Olympian Zeus. Visit ancient monasteries built into rock cliffs built during the Byzantine time period of the 1300's, ancient monuments in Delphi and archeological sites in Thessaloniki. Visit a plethora of art museums filled with ancient artifacts to contemporary art of modern day Greece. Enjoy the white sand beaches in the coastal town of Platamonas and a day trip to Aegina, one of the Saronic islands. While viewing beautiful artwork from across the ages, you will enjoy delicious Mediterranean cuisine, experience vibrant Greek culture and soak in the beauty of this beautiful country.Ìý

Program Itinerary

This was the itinerary for 2025. It is subject to change in 2027.

Day 1

  • Departure from 911±¬ÁÏÍø for Toronto on bus
  • Overnight flight from Toronto to Athens

Day 2

  • Arrival in Athens and bus transfer to hotel
  • Evening walking orientation around the hotel area
  • Evening welcome dinner in a local taverna

Day 3

  • Meet at the lobby for a walking orientation in centralÌýAthens & central Market (Varvakeios Agora), Syntagma and the Monument of the Unknown Soldier
  • Free time for lunch
  • Walk to the Athens Centre
  • Program Orientation of Athens Centre
  • Modern Greek language
  • Greek dance class
  • Evening group dinner


Day 4

  • Guided visit to the Acropolis site
  • Free time for lunch
  • Visit to the Acropolis Museum


Day 5

  • Visit the Byzantine & Christian Art Museum
  • Guided Visit the archaeological site of the Lyceum ofÌýAristotle
  • Walk to Temple of Olympian Zeus
  • Guided Visit to the Temple of Olympian Zeus & Arch ofÌýHadrian and Zappeio Roman Baths
  • Free time for lunch and independent activities
  • Evening walk to Kolonaki and take the Lycabettus Hill Funicular upÌýto the top of Lycabettus Hill

Day 6

  • Check-out from your hotel and departure for Delphi
  • Drive to Osios Loukas monasteryÌý
  • Visit Osios Loukas Monastery
  • Drive to Arachova
  • Lunch in Arachova and free time to explore the area
  • Bus transfer to Delphi and check-in to hotel
  • Visit Delphi upper site and museum and lower site
  • Evening group dinner

Day 7

  • Check-out and departure for Kalambaka
  • Drive to Kalambaka with aÌýbrief visit to Thermopylae and theÌýMonument of Leonidas

  • Visit Varlaam Monastery
  • Visit St.Stephen’s Nunnery
  • Check-in at hotel

Day 8

  • Morning visit to the Great Meteoron Monastery,ÌýRoussanou Monastery, and theÌýAghios Nikolaos Monastery
  • Afternoon lunch in Kalambaka
  • Evening of wine tasting and olive oil tasting

Day 9

  • Check-out from hotel
  • Drive to Litochoro
  • Free time in LitochoroÌý

  • Visit the Museum of Byzantine Civilization of Thessaloniki

  • Bus drop-off to Kavala port and walk to Old Town, CastleÌýand Aquaduct

  • Visit the site, museum and the theatre
  • Transfer back to Thessaloniki


Day 11

  • Drop-off to Ano Polis of Thessaloniki
  • Visit Heptapyrgion and Acropolis of Thessaloniki,ÌýTriangle Tower, Portara Main Gate,ÌýArch of Galerius and the Rotunda
  • Free time for lunch
  • Visit the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki


Day 12

  • Check-out.
  • Stop at Platamonas for free time at the beach and lunch

  • Morning visit to Ancient Agora and the Agora museum

Day 14

  • Walk to National Museum of Contemporary Art

Accommodations

You will stay in a variety of hotel accommodations (doubles or triples) for the duration of the program.

Course Information

AHI 384 (Art History 3 CR) - Aegean Art & Culture

This course provides an opportunity for students to study first-hand about ancient and contemporary art and culture through travel in Greece.Ìý

NOTE: It is strongly encouraged that you have a lower division (100 or 200 level) course in history, arts, or the social sciences to be best prepared for this upper division art history course.

Program Costs & Funding

The program cost for this trip in 2025 was $4,350.00. It is subject to change in 2027.Ìý

Program Fee Includes:

  • Round trip airfare
  • All hotels and accommodation
  • Meals part of the itinerary
  • All in-country transportation, including ferries
  • All projects, activities, workshops, museum entries, etc. part of the itinerary
  • Ground transportation to and from airports (if necessary)Ìý
  • International travel and medical insurance

Not Included:

  • Passport (must be valid at least 6 months past the return date of the program). Contact Josh Fess as soon as possible for assistance with applying for or renewing your passport.
  • Additional meals (meals not in the itinerary)
  • Miscellaneous expenses (such as souvenirs, personal care items, etc.)

Funding Sources:

For SPARK eligible students, you will receive the $1,500 SPARK Grant from the Center for Life's Work. SPARK students will also receive a three credit tuition offset which covers summer tuition for this course. Students will still need to pay the $30 course registration fee.Ìý

For non-SPARK eligible undergraduate students, you may be eligible for funding from the Center for International Education. You will also receive a two credit offset which covers a majority of the summer tuition for this course. You will also need to pay the $30 course registration fee.Ìý
